Movie Discussion Group
Controversy about a movie can be a sign directing people to something they need to think about. From that point, they make their own judgement about the what the movie presented and the dilemma that results. The goal of this group is to use these dilemmas as the basis for interesting conversations.
Movie: The movie title is announced via email or on the webpage. Members attend the movie on their own, or can arrange to go with other members during the week prior to the discussion. Historically, we have attended movies that are showing at Carmike Cinemas, 3587 Market Place Circle, Traverse City. But, in 2008, we will try to incorporate movies playing at the renovated State Theater in downtown Traverse City too.
Format of Club: Members bring whatever pertinent background information about the movie they deem important. That could be information about the author of the script or book on which the movie was based; it could be information about the director or cast, or even the subject matter of the movie if it was historical in nature, etc.
Following this presentation, the group will have a “round-robin” discussion of each member’s thoughts and ideas about the movie. This club is expected to go beyond the simple, “I liked the movie,” or “The main character was so handsome.” The club is intended for enjoyment, but some in-depth discussion is expected, well, isn’t that a given with Mensans? :D
Meetings: We will meet on the first Saturday of the odd numbered months (January, March, May, July, September, and November). The time of the meeting is 11:00 a.m. and the location is announced in Borealis.
